The latest issue (April 2012) of Inflammatory Bowel Disease features the results of a new study from Denmark. They found that 40,640 pregnant women with inflammatory bowel disease (including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) produced babies that were lower in height and weight. However, within 1 year of birth, these babies were able to reach the height and weight of babies born to normal mothers. Through 7 years of follow-up, they found that girls born to mothers with inflammatory bowel disease were more likely to be obese and to have waist circumferences larger than normal infants.
