A recent study collected 351 patients with asymptomatic Crohn’s disease (median age 40; 50.4% female), 19.7% of whom had elevated CRP. At 24 months of follow-up, a total of 16.8% of patients were hospitalized for CD-related complications. The hospitalization rate was 33.3% for those with elevated CRP and 12.8% for those with normal CRP, P < 0.0001. Elevated CRP was associated with the risk of hospitalization (hazard ratio 2.12; 95% confidence interval, 1.13-3.98; P = 0.02). It was concluded that asymptomatic patients with elevated CRP have a 2-fold increased risk of hospitalization over 2 years compared with patients with normal CRP.
