Does herpes itch?

Herpes can present with itchy skin. Herpes usually refers to herpes zoster, genital herpes and herpes simplex, all of which are viral infections of the skin. The herpes virus usually invades the nerves, which can cause abnormal nerve sensation, such as pain and itching. Herpes may initially appear as clusters of small blisters, which may gradually erode and break down as the disease progresses, causing pain, itching or burning sensations, or more intense pain in the case of herpes zoster. Viral herpes is generally treated with a combination of topical creams and oral nerve-nourishing and antiviral drugs. If the itching is severe, oral antihistamines can be prescribed to relieve it, and physical therapy such as laser and ultraviolet irradiation is also available if necessary. In daily life, herpes patients should maintain a relaxed mood, regular work and rest, eat more high-protein, easy-to-digest food, more vitamin supplements, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, and eat less or no spicy and stimulating food.
