How to read the 8 items of liver function

Liver function tests mainly include alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alanine aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, glutamyltransferase, total protein, albumin and so on.
1. ALT, AST rise more than ten times the normal value and last for more than 8 weeks, suspected of chronic active liver disease; taking strong hepatotoxic drugs, aminotransferase can also rise sharply; aminotransferase long-term abnormality, but the level is not high, mostly seen in chronic hepatitis patients; patients with fatty liver aminotransferase is mostly normal or mildly elevated.
2. Bilirubin: mainly related to the mechanism of jaundice, according to the bilirubin indexes of jaundice for typing and determine the treatment plan; alkaline phosphatase is a marker of cholestasis, glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase clinical significance is generally consistent with the specificity is not as good as the former.
3. Total protein and albumin: they are the markers to reflect the prognosis of liver disease; albumin can reflect the synthesis function of liver.
When the liver function is abnormal, it is necessary to combine with the patient’s own condition and improve the examination for the next judgment.
