Although trazodone is better suited for older adults, long-term use may cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, tremor, blurred vision, and postural hypotension.
Trazodone is an antidepressant medication that is primarily used to treat depression, or anxiety disorders accompanied by depressive symptoms. It is also used for mood disorders caused by withdrawal in drug-dependent individuals.
However, if the drug is used for a long period of time, it is recommended that the dosage should be maintained at the lowest possible dose to avoid an increase in the incidence of adverse reactions caused by overdose. Trazodone can cause neurological and digestive adverse reactions such as headache, vomiting, and nausea, and may also result in decreased total white blood cell count and neutrophil count.
Trazodone should be taken correctly as prescribed by the doctor, and to minimize adverse effects it should be taken after as many meals as possible. It should be used with caution in the elderly if they have epilepsy, or if they have poor hepatic or renal function.
