Beware of otitis externa when picking your ears

Recently, I learned that many people came to the clinic with symptoms of itchy ears, localized flowing water and even pus, and upon further understanding, the patients revealed that in recent times, they used a metal ear spoon to pull out their ears because their ears were unbearably itchy, but at first they felt comfortable, but later they found that the more they pulled out, the more itchy they were, and the more they wanted to pull out, which led to the appearance of flowing water and pus in their ears two weeks later. According to Yang Rainbow, the director of the second ward of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery of the four central hospitals, it is not uncommon to see such patients with otitis externa – eczema of the external ear canal combined with fungal infection during clinical treatment. In mild cases, the condition may be characterized by redness and swelling of the external auditory canal, while in severe cases, there may be pus flowing from the ear, ear pain, and secondary infections that may lead to otitis media and tympanitis and even affect hearing. To deal with this kind of otitis externa, Director Yang said that it is crucial to “keep your hands to yourself” and to reduce stimulation such as scratching and digging in the ear, especially using metal ear-pulling devices to avoid bleeding; secondly, you should eat less fish, shrimp, crab and other high-protein diet and allergenic substances; in addition, once the symptoms of running water and pus appear, you should consult a doctor in time and standardize the treatment under the guidance of experts. The use of anti-allergy and treatment of eczema fungal drugs, and regular checkups in heavy cases to prevent complications.
