People tend to use ear-digging spoons to remove earwax by themselves which is also a bad hygiene habit, and some people used to use matchsticks to pull out even worse. The hard stuff will often damage the skin of the outer ear canal, leading to bleeding, infection and chronic irritation leading to otitis externa. You should use sterile cotton swabs and tighten the cotton to prevent loosening left in the external ear canal. Regular checkups at the ENT department are like medical checkups to eliminate the accumulation of more and more dirt.
