Iron deficiency anemia dietary treatment

  Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common types of anemia in children, and is caused by iron deficiency. In addition to the general symptoms of anemia, some children also have what is known as “xenophagia”, which means that they love to eat strange things, such as bark, sand, newspaper, raw rice, flour, etc.  The diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia is not difficult, and the treatment is also very effective. As long as you take iron supplements and get rid of the causes of iron deficiency as ordered by the doctor, the disease will be cured soon. However, the most important thing for iron deficiency anemia is prevention, especially proper feeding and regular health checkups for infants and children.  The iron that our body needs is mainly supplied by food, and the iron in plants is not easily absorbed; while the iron in animal blood, liver and meat, beans and eggs is more easily absorbed. Use the iron pot for cooking and stir-frying can also get a certain amount of inorganic iron salts. The iron content and absorption rate of breast milk are higher than cow’s milk and goat’s milk, so if babies are breastfed sufficiently within 6 months after birth, iron deficiency anemia generally does not occur.  If newborns and infants are not breastfed, they should be fed iron-fortified formula, and iron-containing rice flour should be added at 4 months, and iron-rich foods such as egg yolk, pig liver puree, meat puree and vegetable puree should be added later, otherwise they cannot meet the needs of rapid growth and development during infancy. Older children should overcome poor eating habits such as partiality and picky eating, and parents should also pay attention to providing iron-rich foods in the cooking process. In adolescent girls, the body’s need for iron increases due to the onset of menstruation (not less than 18mg per day), so it is more important to pay attention to the intake of iron-rich foods.  Iron therapy should be taken together with vitamin C to facilitate the absorption of iron, and taken between meals.
