How long can I live with advanced bowel cancer?

There are individual differences in how long a patient with advanced bowel cancer can survive. Because the severity of each person’s disease varies, and each person’s cancer type, location and malignancy also differ, some middle-aged and elderly patients die a few months after being diagnosed with rectal cancer, while others can live 5 years or even longer if they are actively treated. Bowel cancer, including colon cancer and rectal cancer, is the most common gastrointestinal malignancy, second only to stomach cancer among gastrointestinal malignancies. High risk factors include excessive animal fat and animal protein diet, lack of fresh vegetables and fiber foods, lack of moderate physical activity, as well as genetic factors, colonic adenoma, ulcerative colitis and colonic schistosomiasis are all closely related to the occurrence of colon cancer. The survival rate of colon cancer after surgery is mainly related to the disease stage and treatment at the time of diagnosis. Due to the lack of routine checkups or fear of colonoscopy, when bowel cancer is diagnosed, most of the patients’ disease has already developed to the middle and late stages, and the 5-year survival rate of stage III bowel cancer is about 30%, while the 5-year survival rate of stage IV bowel cancer is less than 10%. Therefore, the general survival period of advanced bowel cancer after surgery is several months to several years, which is related to the malignancy degree of the primary tumor and the type of metastasis, as well as the treatment means and the patient’s attitude towards the disease. Therefore, we must take care of our own body, and when we find that the number of stools increases and there is mucus and pus and blood in the stool, we must go to hospital for examination in time for early detection and early treatment, and we must maintain a good state of mind and actively cooperate with the treatment during the treatment period, so that the chances of recovery will be greatly increased.
