Can appendix cancer be cured?

Appendiceal cancer is a common malignant tumor in the gastrointestinal tract that occurs from the small intestinal end to the beginning of the ascending colon in the region of the appendix. Whether cecum cancer can be cured depends on the severity of the tumor. Generally, if it is early stage of cecum cancer and the tumor is limited to the mucosal layer of cecum, the tumor can be eradicated through standard surgical treatment and can be cured. However, if the disease progresses to middle or late stage, the tumor breaks through the plasma membrane of cecum and metastasis to other organs occurs, the chance of complete treatment is reduced, and the prognosis of patients in this case is poor, which may seriously affect the quality of life and survival time of patients. The survival period of appendix cancer after surgery needs to be analyzed and judged by factors such as the completion of surgery, pathological type, stage, patient’s own physical state and the presence of combined underlying diseases. 1. 5-year survival rate of stage I appendix cancer can reach more than 90%; 2. 5-year survival rate of stage II appendix cancer can reach 50%-87%; 3. 5-year survival rate of stage III appendix cancer is 28%-73%; 4. 73%; 4. The 5-year survival rate of stage IV appendiceal cancer is about 10% (some patients with liver metastasis, lung metastasis and ovarian metastasis have the chance of radical resection and the prognosis is better). After treatment, patients should pay attention to improve their lifestyle, regular work and rest, ensure sufficient sleep, appropriate exercise, eat more coarse grains as well as low-salt and low-fat diet, prohibit eating cold, stimulating and spicy food, eat less and more meals, control weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and blood lipids, which can help improve patients’ survival quality and prolong survival period.
