What to do if your nipple cracks while breastfeeding

Cracked nipples during breastfeeding are medically called cracked nipples and are a common complication of breastfeeding. The main cause of cracked nipples is improper breastfeeding position, so you can consult your obstetric nurse practitioner for the correct breastfeeding position after delivery. Don’t be nervous about cracked nipples. Mildly cracked nipples can be breastfed normally, and the nipples should be cleaned before and after each feeding, and hot compresses should be applied before breastfeeding to promote local blood circulation and keep the nipples soft. After breastfeeding, the local cleaning clean, paper towel dry can be given to the application of erythromycin cream, most of them can be healed within a week. If the pain of cracked nipple is more serious, you can suspend breastfeeding on the affected side, and at the same time, suck out the milk to prevent the accumulation of mastitis and other conditions. Keep the affected side dry and apply lip balm or erythromycin ointment locally, which will usually heal within a week or so, and remember that maintaining the correct breastfeeding posture is the key to prevention.
