Do you need to fast for a barium meal?

Fasting is required before the barium meal test. Barium meal fluoroscopy is a fluoroscopy performed on an empty stomach with barium, which adheres to the wall of the esophagus and can be observed under fluoroscopy. It is used for screening of esophageal cancer, esophageal polyps and other diseases. If the barium meal is performed after eating, it may lead to misdiagnosis because food may remain in the esophageal wall after eating, which is not conducive to observation. Do not eat or drink for 6-12 hours before the barium meal test. The day before the examination is mainly a liquid diet, avoid taking medicines containing metals. Drink plenty of water after the examination to promote the discharge of barium. If the stool appears white, it is normal. Patients with suspected intestinal obstruction or gastric perforation, or in the acute stage of gastrointestinal bleeding are forbidden to do barium meal examination. It is recommended to follow the doctor’s instructions to prepare for the examination.
