Treatment of suprasellar cysts

Depending on the patient’s specific condition, conservative treatment or surgical treatment can be chosen as prescribed by the doctor. Suprasellar cysts, also known as suprasellar pool arachnoid cysts, are mostly seen in children. The cysts compress the hypothalamus and ventricles upward, leading to deformation of the aqueduct, pulling of the optic nerve and pituitary stalk, which may be manifested by hydrocephalus, decreased visual acuity, and visual field defects, etc. The cysts may not have significant occupying effects as well as clinical symptoms. For suprasellar cysts that are not large in size and do not have obvious occupying effect as well as clinical symptoms, they can be treated without surgery, and can be temporarily observed clinically and reviewed regularly. If the patient has hydrocephalus, endocrine abnormalities, vision loss, visual field defects and other manifestations, surgical treatment should be considered. The purpose of surgical treatment is to reduce the size of the cyst, reduce the compression of the optic nerve and pituitary gland, and improve the hydrocephalus, which can be done by neuroendoscopic cystostomy and so on. It is recommended that patients presenting with suprasellar cysts should seek timely medical treatment and be actively treated under the guidance of a doctor in order to minimize the adverse effects of the disease.
