Screening for inherited metabolic diseases can be performed during pregnancy. There are two main areas of screening: first, active testing of both spouses to find out if there are any genetic defects in the couple and if there is any risk of genetic disorders after their union. Second, prenatal testing can be performed on the fetus. The fetal amniotic fluid can be genetically tested for a variety of genetic diseases, which can diagnose whether the fetus is suffering from genetic diseases in a timely manner and provide a basis for eugenics.
