The PICC catheter chamber is placed in the patient’s central vein near the heart and the catheter is retained for a long period of time, so it is important to provide sterile care around the catheter on a regular basis. Routinely once a week, the catheter is observed for redness, swelling, nodules, and changes in patient temperature. The catheter can be disinfected with iodophor and rewrapped after disinfection. The catheter itself also requires care. The catheter is sealed with sodium heparin at the end of each infusion to prevent blockage by blood clots in the catheter, and the catheter is flushed with saline before use. If slippage is suspected, a second chest radiograph should be performed to confirm that the catheter is in a good position before use.
