In current times the preferred treatment for patients with short bowel syndrome is pharmacological and nutritional support therapy.
Intestinal rehabilitation, an effective approach developed on the basis of nutritional support, is the best current treatment option for short bowel syndrome in cases where the residual small bowel is better compensated and the patient is able to return to an oral daily diet or enteral nutritional preparations.
When bowel function is not compensated for and parenteral nutrition is not tolerated, surgical treatment may be considered.
