How to manage diarrhoea in short bowel syndrome?

Diarrhoea is the most common symptom and complication of short bowel syndrome. If diarrhoea occurs in patients, during nutrition support, attention should be paid to slowing down the infusion rate of enteral nutrition preparations, reducing the concentration of nutrition preparations, warming up or using anti-diarrhoeal drugs as prescribed by the doctor, applying drugs that delay the passage of intestinal contents and reduce gastrointestinal secretion, etc. If diarrhoea is caused by improper diet, the diet structure should be adjusted or the amount of diet should be reduced or even fasted and switched to Parenteral nutrition.
For water-electrolyte disturbances and acid-base imbalances caused by diarrhoea, oral or intravenous supplementation is needed, as well as vitamin and trace element supplementation.
