If a person has otitis media and the eardrum is perforated and the perforation is small, the patient can take antibiotics to prevent infection while ensuring the inside of the ear canal is clean, and the eardrum will likely heal within a month. However, if the tympanic membrane is perforated to a large extent, it is difficult to heal on its own and surgery is often required to repair the damaged tympanic membrane. It is recommended that patients actively protect their ears from inflammation of the eardrum, which can lead to the formation of a perforation. Clinically, the most commonly used medication is levofloxacin hydrochloride ear drops to reduce inflammation, which can be combined with oral antibiotics, commonly used in clinical practice is amoxicillin capsules. Patients are advised to avoid water inside the ear and swimming. After active treatment, the inflammation of the eardrum will subside significantly.
