What are glucocorticoids?

Glucocorticoids are mainly secreted by the adrenal cortex and have a wide and complex effect. They are divided into short-acting drugs, such as hydrocortisone; medium-acting drugs, such as prednisone and methylprednisolone; and long-acting drugs, such as dexamethasone and betamethasone, etc. For specific applications, clinicians will make appropriate choices according to the patient’s condition. The main effects of glucocorticoids in dermatological diseases are anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-shock and immunosuppressive, and they have effects on glucose metabolism, protein metabolism, water-electrolyte metabolism and fat metabolism. Therefore, there are more specific indications and contraindications, and special attention is needed when applying them. If the condition is not serious and urgent, it is not recommended to use them, because long-term application will have more side effects and also cause laziness of hormone drugs, so it is recommended to apply them reasonably under the guidance of doctors.
