Genital herpes is a clinically common sexually transmitted disease caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus. Therefore, genital herpes is typically characterized clinically by the presence of clusters of blisters on the vulva and perianal mucosa. When the blisters break, the patient develops either localized ulcers or localized skin erosions that can heal on their own, often with significant pain. During the course of genital herpes, patients have systemic symptoms such as fever, malaise, sore throat, or swollen local lymph nodes. For genital herpes, antiviral drugs, like acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir, are more commonly used in clinical treatment. It can also be combined with acyclovir ointment and penciclovir ointment to be applied topically.
