A molluscum contagiosum grows inside the eyelid, called an internal molluscum, and outside the eyelid and lid margin, called an external molluscum. Molluscum contagiosum is an acute inflammation caused by the invasion of septic bacteria, mainly Staphylococcus aureus, into the eyelid glands. Bacterial infection of the eyelash follicles, sebaceous glands, and metaplastic sweat glands grows on the lid margin and outer eyelid and is called external mellitus, while bacterial infection of the lid glands grows on the inside of the eyelid and is called internal mellitus. Both internal and external mydriasis are inflammatory lesions that can cause acute inflammation such as eyelid redness and swelling, localized pressure and pain, and heat.
