What is meant by discogenic low back pain? What are its treatment modalities?

Discogenic low back pain is common in young people under 45 years of age, mainly manifesting as an inability to sit and bend over for long periods of time, while standing and walking is not a problem. Once they drive or bear weight for a long time, they develop low back pain, but the pain does not radiate to the lower extremities, especially the calves and ankles. At this time, if you come to the hospital and have an MRI of the lumbar spine, you can often see that a corresponding disc shows low signal (i.e., dark to the naked eye), but the protrusion is not large. This indicates that the source of the back pain is a tear and loss of water within the disc, rather than a herniated disc compressing a nerve, so this type of back pain is called discogenic back pain. Once round disc low back pain occurs and it has a bad impact on your life, it needs to be treated. Our first choice is of course conservative treatment, which includes physical therapy (heat therapy, electrotherapy, acupuncture, etc.), behavioral therapy (correcting incorrect sitting and walking posture), medication (anti-inflammatory and pain medication), and so on. Usually, 80% of patients can improve or even recover from back pain through these treatments.
