Moderator: What tests should parents do if they suspect their child has Tourette’s Syndrome? Yanling Ren: The diagnosis of Tourette’s Syndrome is mainly based on symptoms. We will do a scale assessment for the child, such as the Child Findings Tic Assessment Scale, to assess whether the child’s symptoms are simple or complex tics and to assess the severity of his or her symptoms. We also need to differentiate from other disorders and do some ancillary tests targeted to the characteristics of each child. For example, an EEG to rule out some epilepsy problems and to see how the child’s brain waves are. Generally speaking, children with severe tics have more slow waves in the EEG, and some may have spikes or sharp waves, so an EEG is usually necessary. The other thing is to observe the child’s motor performance, which needs to be differentiated from chorea and streptococcal infection, etc. We will do some blood tests.
