How to read sputum culture results

A sputum culture report card will show normal flora or normal oral flora growth on it if there is no infection. If a bacterial infection is identified on it, the sputum culture slip will usually give whether it is a competent sputum specimen. A competent sputum specimen with leukocytes > 25 x 10^9/L and squamous epithelial cells < 10 x 10^9/L is a competent sputum culture. Combine this with imaging pictures of the lungs to determine if there are symptoms of infection. If there are also clinical symptoms of infection and a qualified sputum specimen, it will be more diagnostic. However, the sensitivity and specificity of sputum culture is not particularly high, and sometimes it may be miscellaneous bacteria or contamination in the oral cavity, not necessarily pathogenic bacteria. Whether or not it is an infection at this point needs to be judged in the context of the overall clinical situation of the patient.
