Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) often occurs after the herpes zoster lesions have subsided, especially in the elderly, and can be painful to the point of death, affecting sleep, and in some cases still painful for more than a decade, seriously affecting the patient’s quality of life. Regarding the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), Western medicine mainly focuses on nerve nutrition, pain relief, physical therapy or nerve block treatment, but some patients who cannot be relieved after the above treatments can choose Chinese medicine. Therefore, the pathogenesis of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is summarized as qi stagnation and blood stasis, and treatment is based on “moving qi, activating blood and removing stasis”. The treatment is based on “promoting qi, invigorating blood circulation and removing blood stasis”, and is based on the addition and subtraction of “Tao Hong Si Wu Tang”. However, during the clinical study, it was found that many patients were still unsatisfied with the treatment method of “promoting qi, activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis”, because the essence of traditional Chinese medicine, which is to discern the evidence, was lost. During my training at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I saw Mr. Ouyang Weiquan treating post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) with the use of classic prescriptions with remarkable results, which is a masterpiece. He was able to cure nine out of ten cases, regardless of the length of the disease, for elderly and pregnant women. Commonly used formulas such as Zhen Wu Tang, Gua Pou Safflower and Licorice Soup, Paeoniae and Licorice Soup, Wu Ling San, Chai Ling Tang, Gastrodia Soup, Gui Zhi and Ge Gen Soup, Si Wei Tang, Dang Gui Si Wei Tang, Chai Hu and Gui Zhi Soup, etc., can be used to achieve obvious results in as little as one week or as much as one month. The key is to hit the disease mechanism, use the right medicine, the party energy efficiency like a drum! Therefore, the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) should not only be based on the method of “promoting qi, activating blood circulation and resolving blood stasis”, but should firmly grasp the “holistic view” and “discriminatory treatment” of Chinese medicine. We should firmly grasp the “holistic view” and “diagnosis and treatment” of Chinese medicine, open up new ideas, and apply medicine according to the evidence, in order to achieve better results, give full play to the advantages of Chinese medicine, and relieve patients’ pain!
