The principles of treatment for itchy skin in the elderly are: actively search for possible causes, treat the cause symptomatically, reduce the itch to a minimum, and improve the quality of life of the elderly. The key is to “prevent” 1, maintain a good mood and emotions: reasonable arrangements for exercise and sleep, shift the attention to the “itch” to prevent mental factors aggravate the general itching. 2, skin care: elderly people due to skin aging, skin lack of adequate sebum protection, dry and dehydrated, do not bathe too often (too often bathing will make the skin more dry), do not use too much soap products or bath wash skin, do not use too hot water bath, and do not rub the bath. If the skin is still dry, you should consider using some moisturizing cream emollients (glycerin, silicone cream, petroleum jelly, etc.) after bathing. 3, try to avoid local scratching and external use of irritating topical preparations: scratching or using irritating topical preparations seems to make the itching temporarily reduced, but it is a vicious stimulus in itself, which will intensify the itching afterwards. 4, diet: diet should be light, avoid smoking, alcohol, strong tea and coffee, less spicy and irritating food, avoid eating food that is easy to cause allergies. In recent years, thermal underwear is very popular, especially for the elderly wearing light, but thermal underwear is made of a variety of composite laminated materials, two layers of ordinary cotton fabric in the middle of some sandwich layer of fluffy chemical fibers to prevent the human skin and the outside world for gas and heat exchange, so as to achieve the purpose of warmth. This clothing containing chemical fiber components to wear on the human body is easy to generate static electricity, these static electricity around the human body can produce a large number of cations, which can reduce the moisture of the human skin, increased dander. And some poor quality clothing contains too much formaldehyde (with a special smell), can also lead to a number of skin diseases, causing itchy skin. Therefore, the elderly should try to choose cotton clothing, should also be dressed loosely. How is pruritus treated? Under the guidance of a doctor, use antihistamines (such as epinastine, loratadine, cetirizine, paracetamol, etc.) vitamins, glycyrrhetinic acid glycosides and herbs that moisten and relieve itching, and at night you can take sedatives at the same time and use topical drugs containing menthol, camphor, phenol, etc. to relieve itching. If simple treatment does not work well, go to a regular hospital dermatology department as early as possible and ask the doctor to provide a set of targeted treatment and protection methods. For long-term stubborn itching, you can go to the hospital to do some corresponding examinations to exclude potential organ and systemic lesions inside the body.
