There are no studies showing that regular dosage of zejiao has toxic side effects on the kidneys, and there is a possibility of chronic nephrotoxicity if it is taken in high doses for a long period of time. It is recommended that patients regularly use medicines or proprietary Chinese medicines containing zejiao under the guidance of a physician. Zedoary is sweet in flavor, cold in nature, and belongs to the kidney and bladder meridians. It has the effect of inducing water retention and eliminating swelling (facilitating urination and eliminating edema), exuding dampness, diarrhea, resolving turbidity and lowering fat (cleansing the body of impurities and reducing excess body fat). It is mainly used for treating edema, dysuria, diarrhea caused by water-dampness; it can also be used for treating gonorrhea (increased frequency of urination, dribbling and astringent pain) caused by dampness-heat in the lower Jiao (dampness and heat invading the intestines, bladder, yin and lower limbs), as well as for treating dreaming and slippery spermatozoa caused by deficiency of kidney yin, and phase-heat, or night-sweating (sweating abnormally after falling asleep, but stopping after waking up). Note that those with kidney deficiency and slippery essence without dampness and heat should not take Zedoary. If you need to take medication, it is recommended to use it reasonably under the guidance of a professional doctor.
