Can melasma fade on its own?

Most of the melasma cannot fade away by itself, and a few of them can fade away, for example, the melasma appeared during pregnancy may fade away gradually by itself six months or more after delivery. The cause of chloasma is still unknown and may be related to genetics, endocrine and medications such as phenytoin sodium and oral contraceptives. In addition, liver disease, sun exposure and poor quality cosmetics may induce this disease. Since a variety of internal and external factors are involved in the occurrence and development of melasma, it is difficult for melasma to fade on its own with the persistence of etiological factors or triggers. Usually, patients are not recommended to wait for melasma to fade on its own, but can be treated with medications as prescribed by doctors, such as topical depigmentants to reduce pigment production or topical fruit acids to accelerate epidermal renewal. Oral medications can also be used, such as vitamin C and vitamin E combination therapy, which has the effect of anti-lipid peroxidation and inhibiting melanin synthesis. In the case of heavier melasma, melasma can be treated by picosecond and super picosecond laser. In addition, patients need to pay attention to hydration and sun protection on a daily basis, as dry skin tends to aggravate the pigmentation under the effect of ultraviolet rays.
