Penile folliculitis is caused by bacterial infection and often presents as papules, papulopustular rashes, or even nodules and ulcers. If the symptoms are mild and manifest only as papules or papulopustules, antibiotic creams such as fusidic acid and Bactroban can be given for treatment. If it manifests as pustules or even ulcers, it needs to be cleared first, commonly with hydrogen peroxide and saline, and after repeated cleaning, topical application of Bactrim or fusidic acid cream can be used. If the condition is serious and causes swelling of the surrounding inguinal lymph nodes with pain, it must be treated with oral antibiotics, such as doxycycline and azithromycin, and topical treatment with Bactrim or fusidic acid cream can be given at the same time.
