Whether or not glasses are needed for a 9 year old with 4.6 visual acuity requires an optometric examination to check for refractive error. If the vision loss is caused by refractive error, the patient can wear glasses to correct his or her vision. The normal visual acuity for a 9-year-old child is 5.0, and anything below 5.0 is considered vision loss. If the child is determined to have decreased strength due to refractive error through optometry, the patient can wear glasses to correct the refractive error and improve vision. If it is caused by pseudomyopia, usually due to overuse of eyes, after a period of time to rest or adjust the vision back to normal, usually do not need to wear glasses. Children with vision loss are advised to consult a doctor to assess their condition and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
