What is the surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis?

Surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis is the treatment of removing all of the colon or colorectal segments in which inflammatory bowel disease occurs, and then reconstructing the body’s defecation function by means of ileostomy or ileorectal anastomosis.
Surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis begins with resection of the diseased intestinal segment, either total resection of the colon or total resection of the colon and rectum with stripping of the mucosa of the anal canal, with the latter procedure avoiding reoccurrence of lesions in the residual rectum; followed by reconstruction of defecation function by means of ileostomy, ileorectal anastomosis, or ileoanal anastomosis.
Not all cases of ulcerative colitis need to be treated surgically, but only those that have developed bowel obstruction, bleeding, bowel perforation, or suspected cancer. If you are diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, follow your doctor’s instructions.
