Together with maitong, tian dong can nourish yin, moisturize the lungs, and promote the production of fluids. Asparagus has the effect of nourishing yin and moistening dryness, clearing the lungs and generating fluids. It is used in treating lung dryness and dry cough, cough with sticky phlegm, soreness of waist and knees, tidal fever with bone vapor (a burst of heat, feeling that the heat comes from inside the bone to the outside), internal heat and thirst (internal heat accompanied by symptoms such as eating, drinking, and urinating), heat diseases with injury to the body fluid, dry pharynx and thirst, and constipation with dryness of the intestines. Ophiopogon has the effect of nourishing yin and generating fluids, moisturizing the lung and clearing the heart. It is used in treating lung dryness and dry cough, consumptive cough with deficiency of yin, paralysis of the throat (redness, swelling and pain in the throat, or dryness, foreign body sensation, or itchy discomfort in the throat, difficulty in swallowing), sore throat, thirst due to injury of body fluid, thirst due to internal heat, insomnia due to heartburn, and constipation due to dryness of intestines. Note that tian dong and maitong are contraindicated in patients with deficiency and coldness of the spleen and stomach (spleen and stomach weak and cold), low food intake and diarrhea, external wind-cold sensation, and coughing with much phlegm that can be easily coughed up. Patients are advised to use the medicine under the guidance of a doctor and should not take the medicine on their own.
