Care of patients undergoing lumbar puncture

Patient care measures after lumbar puncture include the following: first, the patient should go to the pillow and lie down for about 6 hours after the lumbar puncture operation, and should not leave the bed on the day after the operation, in order to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leakage, the reason is that the lumbar puncture needle passes through the soft spinal membrane, which has a poor blood supply and is not easy to heal by itself after being punctured, and if the puncture site is low after the operation, cerebrospinal fluid leakage can easily occur causing dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. Second, lumbar puncture to determine the low intracranial pressure should be supplemented with fluids in a timely manner after surgery, either orally with light saline or intravenously with fluids such as sodium chloride injection and glucose injection. Third, the patient should be continuously monitored for vital signs after lumbar puncture, such as blood pressure, respiration, pulse rate and oxygen saturation.
