Acupuncture combined with external application of Chinese herbs for the treatment of acne vulgaris

Modern medicine considers acne vulgaris to be a chronic inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands of the hair follicles, manifesting as acne, papules, pustules, nodules, cysts, and scars, and occurring on the face, back, chest, and other areas rich in sebaceous glands. The cause of this disease is complex, but it is generally believed to be related to high androgen levels, increased secretion of cortical glands, abnormal keratinization of the sebaceous ducts of hair follicles, infection by Propionibacterium acnes, environmental and genetic factors. In Chinese medicine, the disease is called “lung wind acne”, “facial pimples” and “wine pimples”. As early as two thousand years ago, acne was discussed in the Nei Jing. It is said in the book “The Book of the Living Qi and Tongtian” that “sweating and seeing dampness are the cause of acne” and “sweating when the wind is in the labor, and cold is thin, and depression is acne”. Jin? Ge Hong’s “Post-Elbow Preparedness and Urgency Formula” says: “Young people are full of qi and have herpes sores on their faces”, recognizing that the onset of acne is related to age, and is caused by the vigor of qi and yang during adolescence. According to Wu Shiji’s “The Encyclopedia of the Rational Boil”, “The theory of external treatment is the theory of internal treatment; the medicine of external treatment is also the medicine of internal treatment; the only difference is the method.” “The external treatment is parallel to the internal treatment, and can supplement the deficiency of the internal treatment”, “The external treatment is free of prohibition, choking, constraint and stagnation”, “simple and without damage”. “can be used in the internal organs without injury”. Wu Shiji, according to the specific disease, on the basis of the external application of ointment, at the same time with needle, moxibustion and other kinds of therapy, needle and medicine together, complement each other. Therefore, the Eighth Hospital in Wuhan uses acupuncture with topical Chinese medicine to treat acne. Acupuncture can improve the body’s immunity, thus inhibiting the survival of Acinetobacter, which is conducive to anti-infection and elimination of inflammation [1]. The external application of drugs can penetrate into the couples through the skin and orifices, and reach the internal organs directly by the meridians, thus exerting a therapeutic effect. The main acupuncture point (Zanzhu of the foot solar bladder meridian is chosen to relieve the heat of the three jiao; Chengjue of the Ren meridian is chosen to unblock the meridian qi and regulate the rushing of Qi; Yingxiang of the hand Yangming large intestine meridian is chosen to relieve the heat of the internal organs and benefit the lung qi), the matching acupuncture point (Yuzhi point for red face, Zhigou point for constipation, and Sanyinjiao point for irregular menstruation), and the A-Yi point (i.e., the skin lesion) and the corresponding Chinese medicinal preparation are applied externally.
