What does nibp mean?

The nibp is a form of automatic continuous monitoring of blood pressure, mainly by means of a cuff tied around the brachial artery pulsation. It is most commonly used in intensive care units and during surgery to observe changes in the patient’s blood pressure and to prevent progressive increases in blood pressure that may lead to hypertensive encephalopathy or persistent decreases in blood pressure that may lead to hypotensive shock and other adverse consequences. This way of monitoring blood pressure generally has no side effects, but care must be taken that the usual restraint band is not tied too tightly to prevent poor arterial and venous blood flow or inaccurate blood pressure measurement. It is important to loosen the restraint band for about 5 minutes after each 2-4 hour test to prevent the blood supply to normal blood vessels from being affected.
