Glucose tolerance test is usually done at 24-28 weeks of gestation. If a pregnant woman has high-risk factors for gestational diabetes or in areas where medical resources are lacking, the first check of fasting glucose can be done at 24-28 weeks of gestation, and if the fasting glucose is ≥5.1 mmol/L, gestational diabetes can be diagnosed directly without the need for a 75g glucose tolerance test. Because gestational diabetes affects both the mother and the fetus, and can cause preterm labor, miscarriage, infection, premature rupture of membranes, etc., it is recommended that pregnant women should have regular diabetes screening, and prompt intervention and treatment if elevated blood glucose is detected.
