A 5mm lumbar disc herniation is not necessarily serious, and the severity of the herniation needs to be judged based on the patient’s spinal canal compensatory space as well as the type of herniation. The size of the herniated disc is not a criterion for determining the severity of the herniation, but rather the relative size of the herniation and the compensatory space of the spinal canal. If the compensatory space of the spinal canal is relatively large and does not exert serious pressure on the nerves, the herniation will not be too serious in most cases; on the contrary, if the herniation has caused narrowing of the spinal canal, there is a greater possibility of nerve compression, and the herniation may be more serious in comparison. The type of herniation can also determine whether the herniation is serious or not, if the patient belongs to the central type of herniation, the herniation of 5mm, most of the cases are not too serious; if the patient belongs to the lateral type of herniation, it is easier to cause unilateral compression of the nerve root, the herniation of 5mm, most of the patients may be more serious symptoms. If the diagnosis of lumbar disc herniation is confirmed, it is recommended that standardized treatment be carried out as soon as possible in order to reduce the adverse effects of the disease.
