Da Qing Long Tang is from Zhang Zhong Jing’s Treatise on Typhoid Miscellaneous Diseases, which mentions that Da Qing Long Tang can treat “Sun stroke with floating and tight pulse, fever and malignant cold, body pain, irritability without sweating” and “those who have overflowing drinks”. According to modern interpretation, Da Qing Long Tang can treat people with exogenous wind-cold symptoms with a tendency to fever, as well as those with swollen limbs with non-digitate edema and no sweating. Therefore, this formula has the effect of generating sweat and relieving exterior manifestations and clearing depressive heat, and also has the effect of reducing swelling and relieving pain. This formula consists of ephedra, cinnamon stick, almond, licorice, ginger, jujube, and gypsum, which is actually Ephedra soup with ginger, jujube, and gypsum. Therefore, ginger and jujube are added to protect the spleen and stomach, so that the source of sweating will not be damaged; gypsum is used to remove heat. This formula is suitable for people with strong constitution who have not received regular treatment for wind and cold, but have fever and vicious chills, obvious body pains, and irritability and discomfort.
