What causes high red blood cells

The causes of high red blood cells are both physiological and pathological, and should be analyzed specifically for different situations.
1. Physiological high red blood cells: physiological high red blood cells can be seen in hypoxia, such as living in the plateau area residents, due to the scarcity of oxygen, the need for more red blood cells and hemoglobin to maintain oxygen transportation, so the number of red blood cells will increase absolutely.
2. Pathological high: including relative increase and absolute increase. Relative increase of red blood cells is mainly due to the decrease of blood volume, which is common in severe vomiting, diarrhea, burns and so on.
Absolute erythrocyte increase includes primary and secondary. The primary cause is true erythrocytosis, and the secondary cause is mainly due to the increase of erythropoietin in the blood to stimulate the production of erythrocytes, which can be seen in pulmonary heart disease, adrenocortical adenomas, polycystic kidneys and so on.
High erythrocyte counts are indicative of certain diseases, but are not diagnostic, and should be combined with other ancillary tests, such as ultrasound, ionization, and electrocardiogram, to determine the cause of the disease and make a differential diagnosis under the guidance of a physician.
