Bypass grafting, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting, is a surgical procedure in which an autologous blood vessel is grafted to the distal end of a narrowed main artery. The procedure for coronary bypass surgery involves opening the chest cavity and examining the heart after general anesthesia. The bypass vessels are intercepted; the great saphenous vein, the small saphenous vein, the internal mammary artery, and the radial artery are common autologous arteries. It stops the heartbeat and reduces metabolism by injecting a stopping fluid into the heart. The ends of the autologous blood vessels are sutured to the aorta and the distal end of the diseased coronary artery, the heartbeat is restored, the sternum is attached, and the chest cavity is sutured shut.
