What is lumbar disc herniation

Lumbar disc herniation is a common and frequent disease in orthopedics and is the most common cause of back and leg pain. In 1934, Mixter and Barr identified lumbar disc herniation as the main cause of sciatica. It is now recognized that most low back pain combined with sciatica is caused by lumbar disc herniation. The disease occurs mostly in young adults, and the patient suffers a lot of pain. Those who have damage to the cauda equina nerve may have urinary and fecal dysfunction, and serious cases may lead to paraplegia, which can have a great impact on the patient’s life, work and labor. Most of them can be diagnosed based on detailed medical history, clinical examination and CT or MR, without the need of imaging.
