What are the disadvantages of a fixed denture

Fixed dentures are commonly used to restore missing teeth and generally have no significant disadvantages. However, there are problems such as cutting of more abutment tissue, compression of the gums and periodontal reaction. Fixed dentures are restorations that restore the anatomical form and physiological function of missing teeth by connecting them to prepared abutments or implants on either side of the missing teeth through a bonding agent or fixture. Fixed prostheses have several disadvantages. Fixed dentures usually require grinding away a certain amount of tooth tissue from healthy abutments on both sides, so more abutment tissue is cut, resulting in a decrease in the caries resistance and fracture resistance of the patient’s teeth. Fixed denture below the direct pressure of the missing teeth gingival position, compression of the gums and the gap between the restoration and the gum tissue can lead to food impaction, thus affecting the maintenance of oral hygiene. Fixed denture is the use of two teeth to bear the force that should bear three teeth, the abutment teeth to bear the force more than its own should bear the force, so there will be periodontal reaction such as periodontal gap widening, tooth loosening, and so on. Moreover, fixed denture has a narrower scope of adaptation, more difficult to make, and often needs to be dismantled and remodeled when it is damaged after cementation. Teenagers, jaw movement limitation, missing teeth area alveolar ridge defect is too large, gingival inflammation, alveolar bone resorption more than 1/3 of the root length, the end of the back teeth free missing and serious deep cover, cross, excessive wear and so on can not be adjusted to coordinate the occlusal relationship of the grinding, is not suitable for fixed denture. If the patient needs to do denture repair, it is recommended to go to the regular hospital to receive specialist examination and treatment, it is recommended that the patient should not be self-diagnosis and treatment, so as not to delay the condition.
