The main effects of glucagon are to stimulate the secretion of water and bicarbonate from the pancreas; to promote the secretion of bile and pepsin; and to inhibit the secretion of gastric acid. Pancreatin is also known as pancreatic secretin, and the endocrine cells that secrete pancreatin are S cells, which are mainly located in the duodenum and jejunum. Glucagon is stimulated by gastric acid and food nutrients (mainly fatty acids) and released. The main functions of glucagon are to stimulate the pancreas to secrete water and bicarbonate, alkaline pancreatic juice to neutralize gastric acid, and to create conditions for digestive enzymes to function in the intestines; to promote the secretion of bile and pepsin; and to inhibit the secretion of gastric acid.
