Breastfeeding is internationally recognized as the most suitable feeding method for newborns. According to the data published by China’s Health and Family Planning Commission, currently, the exclusive breastfeeding rate of 0-6 months infants in China is only 27.8%, far below the international average of 38%. And in 1998, this value was 67% in China, and today, 16 years later, China’s breastfeeding rate has dropped by nearly 40%. There is no doubt that the majority of mothers now realize that breastfeeding is the best way to feed, but due to various reasons such as work and milk quality, some mothers give up breastfeeding and choose formula instead. So what is the advantage of breastfeeding, an important part of eugenics? Breast milk is the most ideal food for babies. First of all, breast milk is derived from the mother’s body and has low allergenicity of the same protein, which can provide nutrition to babies more safely and effectively. Milk powder, no matter how high quality it is, is still from a different kind of milk, and for newborn babies, there is a risk of allergy to different kinds of proteins. In contrast, breast milk contains proteins that are homogeneous to the child and originate from the mother, so it is naturally less allergenic. Furthermore, breast milk contains 140 types of oligosaccharides, which can safely and effectively help babies to improve their immune capacity. In addition, breast milk has a high content of hemiglutamic acid and amino taurine, which are beneficial to the brain growth of newborns and promote intellectual development. For example, after 6 months, lysozyme is secreted in breast milk, which can better protect babies and children who are fed with complementary foods, and in short, whatever ingredients babies need, the corresponding ingredients will be secreted. In addition, among the many nutrients in breast milk, calcium is the most easily absorbed by babies, and usually breastfed babies have better bone development. The development of bones will determine the shape of the face and body. In a research study, the bones of 327 people were measured and it was found that the longer the baby was breastfed, the better the face shape would develop. The 6 months of life is especially critical, as the baby must suck hard while breastfeeding, which will increase the movement of the facial muscles and help the development of the face. Therefore, the Ministry of Health and WHO strongly recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life to ensure healthy bone growth.
