Pituitary tumor is a pituitary saddle at the base of the skull and a pituitary gland in the middle of the saddle. This pituitary gland grows tumors in two ways: non-functional and functional. Pituitary tumors can secrete growth hormone, which causes gigantism and acromegaly. Another type of secretion is prolactin, which causes cessation of menstruation and lactation in women. There are also those that cause Cushing’s syndrome, i.e., centripetal obesity, full moon face, etc. These are some functional tumors. In terms of tumor size, it is divided into small ones, such as tumors not more than 1cm, called microadenomas, and if they are more than 1cm, they are macroadenomas. The treatment for pituitary tumor is divided into two types, as follows: 1. Surgery: If the tumor is large, even if it is a non-functional tumor, it should be removed surgically, because it can release the pressure on normal tissues, the tumor is too large to compress normal tissues, and there is no symptom of pressure after the tumor is removed. If it is a functional pituitary tumor, some need to do surgery, such as growth hormone tumor and ACTH tumor of Cushing’s disease, need to do surgery; 2, drugs: prolactinoma usually do not do surgery, need to rely on drugs, now there are several medicinal use can make the tumor smaller, but need long-term medication, after stopping the tumor will become larger again. Therefore, pituitary tumors can be cured, one is the surgical solution, and there is a need to take medication. But whether every patient can be cured or just controlled depends on the patient’s specific situation, or whether it is a more complex disease. If you have a pituitary tumor, you still need to go to the hospital for a full evaluation and choose the best option.
