Treatment is started early in the disease and most can be cured by combined chemotherapy. The oligobacterial forms are less infectious, some are self-healing, have a shorter treatment period and have a better overall prognosis, while the polymicrobial forms are more infectious, not self-healing, have a longer treatment period and generally have a poorer prognosis.
