“Leprosy mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves, but can also affect the mucous membrane of the nose and eyes, and is indistinguishable from other skin diseases in its early stages.
Skin symptoms: rashes, papules, nodules, ulcers and other types of skin lesions. In the late stages, there may be hypertrophy of the lips, enlarged earlobes, loss of eyebrows and “lion’s face”.
Neurological symptoms: dullness of sensation, ankylosis of the skin, loss of sensation in the limbs, muscle weakness, etc. In the late stages, problems such as atrophy of the limbs and physical disability may occur.
In addition, bleeding, swelling and erosion of the nasal mucosa, enlargement of the lymph nodes, liver and spleen affecting multi-organ function may also occur.”
