Causes of chronic diarrhea

The causes of prolonged diarrhea include infectious and non-infectious factors.
1. Infectious factors: bacterial infections such as Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella, etc., viral infections such as rotavirus, norovirus, etc., parasites such as amoeba, cryptosporidium, schistosomes, etc., fungal infections such as diarrhea-causing fungi such as Candida, Aspergillus, etc.
2. Non-infectious factors
(1) Drugs: Neostigmine, thyroxine, rifampicin, clindamycin, fluorouracil, some antibiotics can cause diarrhea.
(2) Gastric diseases: such as advanced gastric cancer, major gastric resection, chronic atrophic gastritis, gastrojejunostomy, etc., which can cause diarrhea due to the excessive flow of gastric contents into the intestinal lumen.
(3) Intestinal non-infectious diseases: radiological enteritis, ischemic enteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, colonic diverticulitis, intestinal malignant tumors and so on cause diarrhea.
(4) Pancreatic, hepatobiliary diseases: chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, liver cirrhosis, etc., can cause diarrhea due to nutrient absorption disorder.
