Cough with some shortness of breath, if young people, most often seen in acute attacks of bronchial asthma, can be relieved by using bronchodilators to relieve the symptoms of shortness of breath, such as the use of salbutamol sulfate or terbutaline sulfate for relief. Coughs can also be treated with expectorant medications, such as ambroxol hydrochloride or acetylcysteine. In the elderly, cough and shortness of breath are most often seen in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis or, in some cases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In addition to bronchodilators to relieve symptoms of shortness of breath, antibiotics are often needed to control infections, such as amoxicillin and cefadroxil, and glucocorticoids are given to control chronic inflammation of the airways, including beclomethasone and budesonide.
