Does esophageal diverticulum heal on its own?

Usually, esophageal diverticula do not heal on their own. Esophageal diverticulum refers to a pouch formed when one or the whole layer of the esophageal wall expands outward and communicates with the esophageal lumen. It is an irreversible pathological structure and is a disease caused by a combination of factors, such as anatomical factors, muscle movement disorders, inflammatory adhesions, scar contraction, congenital dysplasia, and esophageal motor dysfunction. Esophageal diverticulum is asymptomatic at the initial stage, with the gradual enlargement of the diverticulum, most of the patients have obvious and progressive aggravation of the symptoms, which may include gurgling sound during swallowing, dysphagia, esophageal reflux and other symptoms. Surgery is the main treatment for esophageal diverticulum. Esophageal diverticula that are small, without obvious clinical symptoms and without cancer can be temporarily treated conservatively with regular follow-up and observation. For those who cannot be treated with conservative medical treatment, timely surgical treatment should be carried out.
